About The Book
This book is now a classic one and an important resource for the study on the subject. The revised 3rd edn (2012) makes earlier books obsolete.
A new Chapter on “Biotechnologically Derived Drugs” introduces the essentials of the emerging field of therapeutics. The Chapter 2 on “Chemical Naming and Graphics of Organic Drugs” provides the key to chemical structures and “structural” interconnectivity of different classes of drugs. It also describes 3-letter and 1-letter symbols used for each amino acid in naming polypeptides which are not generally available in chemistry books.
The Chapter 3 on “International Nonpropriety Names (INNs)” is useful for knowing the “medicinal” interconnectivity of drugs and their therapeutic usage.
The Chapters (44) that follow present a comprehensive overview of the design, structure-activity relationship studies and development of the different classes of drugs, with focus on drugs official in Indian and the British Pharmacopoeia, describing also briefly the essentials of their commonly used synthesis or methods of preparation and the pharmacopoeial specifications.
The text ends with the Glossary of Medical Terms and of the Terms used in Medicinal Chemistry to understand all that happens with and around drugs. An exhaustive Index offers easy location of information.
